The small wine country of Austria offers a great variety of interesting wines that, for all their diversity, have in common the tension between maturity and freshness.
Today, Austria's wines are appreciated by wine experts and wine lovers all over the world alike. Handcrafted by down-to-earth winemakers, they repeatedly demonstrate their potential in international blind tastings. Particularly noteworthy is their distinctive, exciting character, for which seven factors are decisive.
Climate
Austria's special geographic location is the most important factor in the unique quality of its wines.
Land and soil
Just as unique as the character of the areas is, so are their wines. In addition to the climate, the soils contribute to this: crystalline stone terraces or massive loess layers in Lower Austria, calcareous soils in northern Burgenland and southern Styria, or volcanic soils in Kamptal and southeastern Styria, for example.
The grape varieties
Internationally successful varieties such as Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Gelber Muskateller, Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet ripen in certain areas and sites of Austria into independent wines with finesse and character typical of their origin.
The culture
Wine has been a part of Austrian culture for more than two millennia. Even today, Roman cellars, medieval villages and Baroque monasteries and castles are part of the picture of our wine-growing regions.
Sustainability
Austrians love nature and therefore treat it with particular respect. Environmental protection, especially clean water, healthy and GMO-free food, biodiversity, energy and material efficiency have a high priority in this country.
The value
Family-run wineries dominate the Austrian winegrowing scene, so mass production is not a priority.
The taste
With their compact body and climate-induced freshness, Austria's wines are brilliant food companions to dishes from a wide variety of cooking styles and cuisines: from Central Europe to Mediterranean countries to Asia, from ethnic to fusion cuisine.
